Spain
Monday 02 October 2017
With this harvest estimate, Spain will be able to consolidate its leadership on EU markets and diversify its exports to third markets.
The 2017/18 season should see a slight drop in lemon volumes according to the latest harvest estimates by AILIMPO (Asociación Interprofesional de Limón y Pomelo).
According to AILIMPO forecasts, production of lemons in Spain will be 1 115 000 tonnes for the 2017/18 season, a decrease of 3.7% compared to the 2016/17 season which ended on the 31st of August with 1 157 800 tonnes.
For lemon varieties, a 12% increase is expected for FINO lemon, with a total expected harvest of 907 000 tonnes. This increase is due to the introduction of new plantations. The VERNA variety is expected to decline by 40%, due to the high temperatures that affected flowering in May and June, with an expected production of 208 000 tonnes.
The FINO lemon season began in the last week of September, with volumes harvested and exported to increase in October.
These forecasts for the 2017/18 season will enable Spain to continue to strengthen its trade position in the EU with a market share of more than 80% but also to export to third markets such as the Middle East, Canada and Brazil.
