The COVID-19 pandemic has an unexpected benefit for Florida agriculture. American consumers have increased their purchases of orange juice.
According to marketing and research firm Nielsen, retail sales of orange juice in the United States jumped nearly 38% in March compared with the same period last year.
American consumers have stockpiled and continue to buy orange juice. For fear of falling ill, many people consume orange juice to fill up on vitamin C and thus strengthen their immunity.
Florida Department of Citrus reported that the increase is very significant, particularly on the 100% orange juice product. Some companies in the state of Florida have seen their sales of orange juice increase by 25 to 50%.
This renewed demand for orange juice will give family producers in the state of Florida the opportunity to maintain their operations. The industry has been hit hard over the past few decades by a variety of illnesses, foreign competition, hurricanes and changes in the eating habits of the American public.
Until now, sales of orange juice have been steadily declining. According to USDA, consumption of orange juice in the United States increased from around 6 gallons (22.71 liters) in 1998 to 2.5 gallons (7.5 liters) in 2018.
