In 2021 Italian consumers spent 553 million euros on products containing at least 1 Fairtrade certified ingredient. These include fresh fruit such as bananas and pineapples, coffee, chocolate, dried fruit and various products (cane sugar, biscuits, cereals, etc.).
The annual activity report of Fairtrade Italy was recently presented. According to this report, in 2021 bananas remained the most sold product in volume with 14,230 tonnes (13,519 tonnes in 2020). Cocoa volumes sold totaled 8,909 tons (8,147 tons in 2020), coffee volumes sold totaled 843 tons (776 tons in 2020), cane sugar volumes sold totaled 5,158 tons (4,682 tons in 2020).
Large retailers remain the main distribution channel for Fairtrade certified products.
This increase in volumes sold is very satisfactory according to Thomas Zulian, Commercial Director of Fairtrade Italy, who underlines that "the growing interest of consumers allows us to look to the future with confidence despite the complex economic and geopolitical framework".
