The project will modernise irrigation across 427 hectares and support thousands of small farmers.

Mexico is introducing modern irrigation systems in Morelos to help farmers produce more food while using less water, according to the National Water Commission (Conagua).

The work is part of the National Agricultural Modernisation Programme and covers 427 hectares within Irrigation District 016. Two demonstration plots are being equipped to show local growers how the new systems can improve water efficiency and crop production.

The project will reduce water losses caused by leaks, filtration and evaporation. The water saved through the upgrades may also help strengthen supplies for nearby communities.

The wider modernisation of Irrigation District 016 is expected to support thousands of small farmers and promote more productive and sustainable agriculture in Morelos.
