India’s banana hub Burhanpur expects stronger export season

More farmers are entering the trade, driven by promising inquiries from both domestic and international markets.
A surge in banana export activity is underway in Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh, India, thanks to favorable weather and rising market demand. The region, which contributes around 15% of India’s total banana production, is seeing stronger interest from international buyers this season. According to official data, Burhanpur exported roughly 70,000 metric tons of bananas in the 2024–25 financial year — a figure likely to climb further in the months ahead.
Local farmers and traders attribute this growth to good rainfall during the summer, which improved both yield and quality. Harvesting has begun, with peak supply expected in June. At present, nearly 140 truckloads of bananas are arriving daily, each carrying between 20 and 30 tons.
Local banana growers note that export inquiries have increased significantly compared to last year, and overall production is up across all growing zones. The region’s total output surpassed 1.7 million metric tons in FY 2024–25.
With growing demand from domestic markets such as Gujarat and Punjab, more local producers are entering the export trade independently. A local horticulture official confirmed that the financial opportunity is drawing in new players. Traders expect this season to outperform the last, with key dispatch points including Burhanpur, Khandwa, Dhar, and Barwani.
