Significant decrease in tomato production for industry
MD
The FAECA, organization of cooperatives in Andalusia, expects a significant reduction in tomato production for industry.
The decline estimated by FAECA is 30%. Production should reach 230,000 tons far behind the 320,000 tons harvested last season.
This initial estimate should be adjusted, but the decline in production is largely explained by lower areas. For the 2011/2012 campaign, areas represent 3337 hectares, while there were 4121 hectares for the 2010/2011 campaign, which represents 20% less than to those grown last year and almost 40% lower than the 2009/2010 season.
Concerning yields, the FAECA expects 70 tons per hectare, less than the 2010/2011 campaign (78 tons per hectare) but better than 2009/2010 (62 tons / hectare).
