A major sector in the country's economy, tourism could also help stimulate agricultural production.
A survey conducted by Fiji's Ministry of Trade and Tourism found that local product spending is only 48% of total fresh food expenses for hotels and resorts in the country.
Last year, tourism organizations in Fiji spent more than FJD 74 million (US $ 30 million) to buy fresh produce, less than half (48%) of which was for local products.
However, the study shows that the situation has changed positively, since in 2011 these tourist structures imported up to 80% of their fresh produce.
To amplify this positive trend, the study suggests creating closer synergies between the tourism and agriculture sectors, as well as further improving the quality of Fijian fresh produce.
