La Niña: rainfall will intensify throughout most of April

Colombian agricultural sector is on alert for the increasing rainfall that causes damage in different regions: floods, landslides and mass movements.

The La Niña phenomenon began in March and will continue until mid-June. Rainfall will intensify at Easter and throughout most of April, according to Yolanda González, director of the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam).

Regarding the regional impact, they point out that these heavy rains that are expected in April will increase in the south of the Caribbean Region, in a large part of the Andean Region, and in some sectors of the Piedemonte Llanero. At the same time, there will be alternate days with less precipitation.

Damages due to increased rainfall could also occur in Santander, Caldas, Antioquia, Quindío, Risaralda, Cundinamarca, and the center and north of the Andean Region.

Should be taken into account that the agricultural sector will experience consequences related to the increase in humidity in crops.

The crops that could be most affected are: potatoes, yams, corn, beans, sesame and some horticultural crops such as cucumber, tomato, squash, paprika, chili pepper, coriander, lettuce, onion, plantain and banana, according to with Agrosavi researchers.
