Discount campaign aims to support demand through restaurant supply channels.
South Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs is working with food-service supply marts to promote domestic onion consumption after a rise in production.
MAFRA said the special onion promotion will run from May 22 to 31 at 31 member stores of the Korea Food Service Distribution Association. The campaign will sell domestic onions through a “buy one, get one free” format.
The ministry said the measure is intended to ease costs for food-service businesses and consumers, while encouraging wider use of Korean onions. It also aims to expand large-volume demand through supply channels used by restaurants and catering companies.
MAFRA added that it is also working on supply management measures, including shipment control at production areas, support for export expansion and a possible increase in government purchase and storage.
Vice Minister Kim Jong-gu said onion supply had increased this year due to favourable growing conditions, and that the government would continue measures to stabilise the market.
