China reports slight fall in farm wholesale price index

Vegetable and fruit wholesale averages both moved lower on May 22.
China’s Agricultural Products Wholesale Price 200 Index fell slightly on May 22, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
The index stood at 113.99, down 0.06 points from the previous day. The wholesale price index for “vegetable basket” products also declined by 0.06 points, reaching 114.23.
Fresh produce prices moved lower. The average wholesale price of 28 monitored vegetables was 4.09 yuan/kg ($0.60/kg), down 1.2% from the previous day. The average price of six monitored fruits was 7.72 yuan/kg ($1.14/kg), down 0.8%.
For other monitored products, pork averaged 14.80 yuan/kg ($2.18/kg), beef 66.41 yuan/kg ($9.77/kg), mutton 63.57 yuan/kg ($9.35/kg), eggs 9.40 yuan/kg ($1.38/kg) and white chicken 17.20 yuan/kg ($2.53/kg).
Among the 46 monitored fresh agricultural products, the strongest price rises were recorded for scallions, zucchini, and garlic. The largest declines were for Chinese cabbage, watermelon, Chinese chives, cucumber and tomato, with decreases ranging from 3.0% to 3.5%.
