New citrus nursery opens in Nueva Vizcaya

A four-unit citrus nursery has been handed over to the Malabing Valley Multipurpose Cooperative in Kasibu, Nueva Vizcaya, the Philippine Department of Agriculture’s Region II office reported. The facility cost is PHP 8 million (about USD 129,900).

Its immediate job is to increase the supply of quality citrus planting material. The cooperative already operates a one-hectare nursery and sells several varieties elsewhere in Luzon, including calamandarin oranges, Satsuma and Ponkan mandarins, and pomelos.

More than 300 farmers belong to the cooperative. It is also training younger growers in citrus production.

The regional agriculture office wants the new facility to help develop Kasibu further as a citrus supply centre for Northern Luzon and widen market opportunities for locally produced fruit.
