End of strike which paralyzed ports and which forced exporters of fruits to turn to the air freight to keep their markets.
An agreement between Transnet and the labor union allowed the end of the strike which disrupted rail traffic and harbour activity for 3 weeks.
This strike affected imports of fuels, manufactured goods, exports of raw materials (coal, metals) and especially fruits.
Some South African producers turned to air transport to export their products to keep markets.
The Association of “Subtropical Fruit Growers” producers, which represents approximately 400 producers and sends about 2 000 tons of avocados in Europe, has sent cargoes by air traffic.
Air transport was the only possibility to continue to export and to try to limit damage with the European customers who cancelled numerous contracts with South African producers.
