Low impact of the Halloween on the market of pumpkins
FJ
No significant increase for pumpkins.
CIA (Confederazione agricoltoria italiana) estimates 300 million euros the expenses for Halloween (costumes, decorations, candy). Representing -15% compared to 2012, which generated 360 million revenue. For the agriculture and star product of the festival, the pumpkin, the impact is low. Only a slight increase between 1 and 2% for ornamental pumpkins.
CIA explains this low impact by the low success of this festival in Italy and by the effects of the economic crisis. Pumpkins are now sold throughout the year and there is no significant increase in sales between the end of October and the beginning of November.
Domestic production of pumpkins reached about 50 million pounds per year. A downward trend (about -12%) is observed, in part because of the caprices of the climate, but also because of the low profitability that discourages the investments.
The cultivation of pumpkins "Made in Italy" covers a total area of ??2000 hectares, mainly in the regions of Lombardia (Mantova, Cremona, Brescia), Emilia-Romagna (Ferrara), Veneto (Venice), Campania.
