Southern hemisphere: Stability for pear production and + 6% for apple production

WAPA (World Apple and Pear Association) has released its forecast for the 2021 production of pears and apples in the southern hemisphere. Pear production is expected to be stable and apple production is expected to increase by 6% from the previous year.
These WAPA forecasts are based on data from ASOEX (Chile), CAFI (Argentina), ABPM (Brazil), Hortgro (South Africa), APAL (Australia) and New Zealand Apples and Pears.
Pears. Producers in the southern hemisphere are forecasting a stabilization of the harvest at 1,346,000 tonnes, an increase of 2% compared to the global average for the years 2018-2020. The increase in South Africa (+ 3%), Australia (+ 2%) and Argentina (+ 1%) should offset the expected declines in Chile (-3%) and New Zealand (-10%) . Regarding exports, volumes should reach 708,690 tonnes, or + 6% compared to the previous year. With volumes of 373,996 tonnes (+ 12%) for Argentina, 214,361 tonnes (+ 2%) for South Africa,) and 108,315 tonnes (-3%) for Chile.
Apples. The 2021 harvest in the southern hemisphere is expected to reach 5,029,000 tonnes, or + 6% compared to last year (4,818,000 tonnes). Chile will remain the No.1 in production with 1.512 million tonnes, followed by Brazil (1.130 million tonnes), South Africa (1.013 million tonnes), Argentina (617,000 tonnes), New Zealand (547,000 tonnes) and Australia (271,000 tonnes). Regarding exports, volumes are expected to total 1,691,562 tonnes, with stable figures for Chile (650,773 tonnes), an increase of 4% for South Africa (476,000 tonnes) and a decrease of 7 % for New Zealand (372,000 tonnes).
