Surfaces dedicated to organic farming: Spain retains its European leadership

In Spain the areas dedicated to organic farming increased by 3.1% last year (+ 3.7% over the last 5 years).
The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture reveals that the country has registered a 3.1% increase of its areas dedicated to organic farming and maintains its position of No.1 in the EU.
In Spain, areas dedicated to organic farming increased by more than 280,000 hectares in 2017, exceeding 2,082,000 hectares, an increase of 3.1% compared to 2016. The average annual growth in last 5 years reached 3.7%.
While half of the area is devoted to permanent pastures, the observed growth is also confirmed for vegetable crops, fruits, citrus fruits and berries in particular.
Under the National Food Chain Control Plan, 48 166 controls were carried out on the internal market and 1 633 border controls.
