Kenyan media says regulator, in agreement with Avocado Society of Kenya, is banning avocados' ransacking to protect immature crops being pressure by traders looking to profit from high prices in the international market .
Farmbizafrica, a Kenyan media, announces that HCD (Horticultural Crops Directorate), in agreement with the Avocado Society of Kenya, is preparing to ban avocados’ harvest, to avoid the marketing of immature fruits.
"We have agreed with the regulator that we are closing the harvest to protect our international market from unscrupulous traders who would like to harvest immature fruits for sale," said Ernest Muthomi, president of the Avocado Society of Kenya.
This suspension should be lifted on February 15 for the Fuerte variety and on March 15 for the Hass variety.
The main season for Kenyan avocados runs from March to September. Fuerte's avocados are available from February and the Hass variety is available from March. The climate and the different growing areas of the avocado in Kenya allow you to have fruit all year long, but in much smaller quantities outside of the main season.
