British strawberry season delayed by 15 days

The colder and gloomier than average weather (only 95.2 hours of sunshine in March) has favoured slow development of the strawberries.

 

The local media quoted British strawberry growers as saying that the 2024 season would be around 15 days late. The 1st large harvests of the season are scheduled for the end of May.

 

The fruit will be large and juicy, according to the growers. The weather conditions caused no damage, as the crops were protected under tunnels. Slow growth has strengthened the plants, which will produce larger fruit.

 

Thanks to advances in growing techniques, strawberry production in the UK now covers domestic market demand throughout the summer season, from early May to late October.
