Castilla y León stands out as a European leader in strawberry plant production. This was highlighted by María González Corral, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development of Spain, who emphasized the innovation in greenhouse cultivation and specified that the region has 35 nurseries and 1,500 hectares, producing nearly 950 million plants annually thanks to its climate conditions and the skills of its producers.
Currently, the nurseries in Castilla y León are finishing the harvest of plants cultivated in the summer in provinces such as Segovia, Ávila, Valladolid, and Soria, which will then be transplanted for fruiting in other regions.
Eighty-seven percent of the production is destined for Andalusia and European Union countries such as Italy and Greece, while one-third is exported to other countries, including Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. Regarding refrigerated plants, Algeria and Brazil account for more than 60% of exports, with shipments also going to Egypt, Argentina, Uruguay, Armenia, and China.
