15% decline expected in garlic production in the Castilla-La Mancha region

The garlic campaign in Castilla-La Mancha (Spain) is commencing with a projected production decline of 15%. This drop can be attributed to two factors: a decrease in planted hectares and lower emergence, particularly affecting purple garlic due to the impact of heat waves, according to Julio Bacete, sector manager at Cooperativas Agroalimentarias de Castilla-La Mancha.
However, he highlights the favorable quality of early garlic or spring garlic. Despite the preceding hot weather, the recent cooler temperatures have facilitated its recovery and favorable ripening. However, he acknowledges that the purple garlic campaign is still a month and a half away, with further progress needed before assessing its quality.
Bacete pointed out the previous campaign as unusual due to the adverse effects of heat waves, which resulted in unexpected internal damage and a 25% decrease in garlic production.
The reduced cultivation area in the current campaign stems from stagnant market conditions and persistently low prices. Furthermore, the garlic sector is facing a decline in overall consumption.
Bacete emphasizes the need for more significant price incentives to ensure profitability. The current costs of purple garlic range between 1.10 and 1.20 euros per kilo, while early garlic costs around one euro, barely covering expenses.
