China's Zero-Covid policy is hampering Thai fruit exports. Also Thailand wants to diversify its markets and develop its exports to the Middle East.
In Thailand, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives aims this year to increase fruit shipments to Middle Eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, where demand for Thai fruits (rambutan, mangosteen , longan, mango, durian) is high.
The negotiations carried out with the United Arab Emirates, make it possible to predict, according to Rachada Dhnadirek, deputy government spokesperson, an increase in exports. Exported Thai products could generate revenue of 10 billion THB (299.2 million USD), an increase of 4.6% compared to last year.
The government is also in talks with China to facilitate exports. Currently, the Chinese authorities strictly control all fruit containers entering the country at the 4 border checkpoints, in accordance with their Zero-covid policy. These control processes are time-consuming, delaying shipments, sometimes causing fruit to rot and leading to reduced revenue for Thai exporters.
