Ecuador is likely to take market share in banana exports to China.
In the Philippines, the Banana Growers and Exporters Association (PBGEA) is concerned about competition from Ecuador. The Chinese market is virtually closed to banana exporters from the Philippines due to a tightening of quarantines since March.
The PBGEA says that China and Ecuador have begun talks with the aim to replace exports from the Philippines. Ecuador is
farther from China and the distance makes their products uncompetitive. PBGEA has denounced subsidies implemented by Ecuador to compensate for this.
The PBGEA suggests that the authorities of the Philippines offer the same kind of support. Philippine exporters are now looking for other markets with the Middle East and Europe appearing to be the best targets.
