South Korea checks accuracy of produce residue testing laboratories

South Korea has started checking the analytical accuracy of 51 institutions responsible for agricultural safety testing, according to the National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service under MAFRA. The laboratories test produce already on the market or awaiting shipment, and their findings can lead to delayed shipments or disposal when products fail safety standards.

Samples for the assessment began going out on August 25, with testing scheduled to continue through October. Forty-eight laboratories will be assessed for pesticide-residue analysis, 33 for heavy metals and seven for pathogenic microorganisms. A further 26 laboratories will be assessed for heavy metals in soil.

The checks follow international ISO standards. Laboratories whose results fall outside the accepted statistical range will receive technical support to identify problems and improve their testing procedures. Training for analysts is also planned in October.
