In South Africa, the 2021 sweet citrus season is over, with a record in terms of volumes packaged for export.
CGA (Citrus Growers'Association) announced in its latest report that the 2021 sweet citrus season
(soft citrus) recorded a total exported volume of 30.9 million boxes of 15 kg.
This 2021 volume is significantly higher than the 2020 volume, which totaled 23.6 million 15kg boxes.
In terms of varieties, Nadorcott / Tango continues to dominate the category with 15.3 million boxes in 2021. The Orri variety totals 1.7 million boxes, the Leanri variety 1.6 million boxes, the Nova variety 4.1 million boxes. Clementines total 4.6 million boxes, satsumas 1.7 million boxes.
In terms of destinations, Europe remains the largest market with 114,000 tonnes, followed by the United Kingdom (84,000 tonnes), the Middle East (65,000 tonnes), North America (53,000 tonnes) , Southeast Asia (42,000 tonnes).
According to South African professionals, the harvest was record but the season was difficult, with incomes affected by higher logistics costs and greater competition in this category of citrus.
