In Australia last year, passion fruit products were all sold in the domestic market.
In Australia many varieties of tropical fruits are little or not exported. The potential for development is therefore important according to the findings of a study on export strategies for Australian tropical fruits by 2023.
Australian Tropical Fruit Export Strategies 2023 examined export opportunities for several commodities: bananas, papayas, passion fruit, lychees, persimmons and limes.
While Australian bananas, because of higher labor and freight costs, can hardly compete with products from other countries, passion fruit and lychees have a lot of potential.
Australian passion fruit is distinguished by dark-skinned varieties, varieties only shared with New Zealand. This particularity with the guarantee of quality would make the difference and attract many consumers in the Asian markets. For litchis, Australia, which has the longest production window in the world, can easily strengthen its presence in existing foreign markets and seize opportunities in new markets.
