Can fresh produce loaded in Agadir (Morocco) arrive in Perpignan (France) within 3 days, avoiding Spanish roads’ congestion? It seems possible since 10th December, when a new railway connection operated by Acciona Rail Services connects the Port of Algeciras with Barcelona with a transit time of 20 hours. This service is part of the company’s commitment to a logistics chain designed to connect Morocco with Europe.
The logistics framework includes a road link from Agadir to Tangiers Port, to then cross the Strait of Gibraltar by ship to Algeciras Port and then take the train to Barcelona. From Barcelona, a road connection to Perpignan is available.
This new rail service marketed by Acciona Rail is to be operated by Renfe, with a total rake of 22 wagons. The daily service is to work in both directions and is focused on the transportation of perishable Moroccan export by reefer northwards and to return empty on its way back to the south of the peninsula.
By supporting the new rail service, Acciona Logística estimates that 900 export HGVs can be handled every month. One of the keys to the service’s success is the specialist reefer container: at 45 foot long and with a 33-pallet capacity, they are similar to those used by articulated HGVs on the roads.
