In winter, the British market imports 90% of its tomato needs. This year the difficult weather conditions at the main suppliers have affected harvests and reduced supplies.
According to local media, UK consumers are facing a shortage of tomatoes resulting from harsh weather conditions (cold, heavy rain,...) in Spain and Morocco which have caused lower yields and longer growing times. This has reduced the volume of shipments reaching the UK market.
The reduction in the volume of imported tomatoes, according to BTGA (British Tomato Growers Association), explains the current shortage which should not last beyond a few weeks. The British tomato season is approaching and large volumes are expected from the end of March.
