Honduras is the second largest country in Central America, after Costa Rica, in terms of pineapple production and exports. The sector expects exports to increase by 8% in volume.
According to ANDI (Asociación Nacional de Industriales) in Honduras, pineapple production is increasing every year. The production area is about 5,000 hectares throughout the country. Producers expect to be well over 75,000 tonnes of exported pineapple, which by the end of 2018 had generated $32 million in revenue.
This year the exportable production will reach at least 81,000 tons, an increase of 6,000 tons (8%) compared to 2018.
The main pineapple markets in Honduras are the United States, the Netherlands and other Central American countries.
