Smuggling from Costa Rica threatens local production and phytosanitary safety in Panama
The producers of Tierras Altas in Panama have made an urgent appeal to the authorities, especially to the National Customs Authority, to reinforce controls against the smuggling of onions from Costa Rica. They warn that this illegal activity puts the country's phytosanitary security at risk and seriously affects the economy of local farmers.
Lorenzo Jiménez, a producer in the region, pointed out that onion smuggling has increased due to overproduction in Costa Rica, which generates unfair competition for Panamanian producers. He also stressed the need to take immediate measures to protect national production.
Farmers demand strong actions to guarantee the stability of the local market and prevent the entry of illegal products, thus ensuring the sustainability of Panamanian onions.
