Turbulence for pineapple production in Costa Rica

Excessive rains for months and the departure of 500 small producers have led to negative consequences for pineapple production.
Excessively wet weather conditions that have been added to the consequences of a "strong" dollar " pushed 500 small producers out of business. Which resulted in the abandonment of about 5000 hectares of pineapple plantations .
2 years ago planted area reached 45,000 hectares, after the departure of the 500 small producers of pineapple total area is more than 38,000 hectares.
The value of pineapple exports increased from USD 529 million for the first 7 months of 2014 to 479,000,000 USD for the same period in 2015 .
Pineapple is the second agricultural export of Costa Rica, just behind bananas. In 2014 , it generated sales of USD 865 million and 905 million USD for bananas.
