Spanish tomato growers demand Protected Geographical Indicator (PGI) status.
Murcian fresh produce grower association Asaja Murcia has this week called on the European Commission to grant PGI status to the regions tomato crop.
Asaja Murcia secretary general Alfonso Galvez Caravaca said obtaining the quality seal would give added value to the regions tomato production because it is recognised in international markets.
"We need to take actions to promote our tomatoes and through this quality mark we could better inform consumers in foreign markets about the qualities of the tomatoes that we produced in this region," he explained.
Mr Galvez is also calling on the EC to grant PGI status to Murcian lemons, a move he believes could open new markets for the regions exporters.
