A new severe weather event has hit Vietnam, with floods triggered by heavy rains submerging hundreds of hectares of dragon fruit plantations
The floods are affecting Binh Thuan province in the south of the country, which is the largest growing area in Vietnam with 28,000 hectares and a production of 600,000 tons of dragon fruit each year. According to a local official, about 400 hectares of crops, mainly dragon fruit, have been submerged. Part of the cactus family, dragon fruit does not tolerate immersion in water.
In recent months, other regions in Vietnam have been affected by heavy rains and floods. Across the country, about 90,000 hectares of crops have been destroyed, according to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO) at the end of last month.
