A high speed railway line connecting the Red Sea and the South of the country is on project
The Spanish and the Egyptian governments will cooperate on two feasibility plans: the second tunnel under the Suez Canal and a bridge for road transport between the two shores.
On November 24 the Spanish Premier Zapatero, after a meeting with Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif and various ministers from both governments, announced that Spain will further cooperate with Egypt as part of a current cooperation projects between the two Countries, which include transport, infrastructure, energy, agriculture, food safety, and tourism - ANSAmed news agency reports.
The first project regards a second tunnel under the Suez Canal, which will be added to the existing project, part of the government's urbanisation plan in the Sinai Peninsula, starting from the east with Port Said.
The second project involves a bridge for road transport between the two shores.
A third project envisages a high speed railway line connecting the Red Sea and the south of the country ending in Luxor, which will contribute to the development of the tourism industry for Upper Egypt's archaeological sites.
Additionally, cooperation between Spanish and Egyptian businesses was discussed during the meeting, that was also attended by Foreign Ministers Abul Gheit and Miguel Angel Moratinos. Trade volume between the two countries was 2.5 billion euros in 2008. Egyptian exports totalled about 900 million euros, mainly due to natural gas.
