According to official estimates, the 2022/23 production of carrots for the fresh market should fall sharply, mainly due to unfavorable weather conditions and the reduction in surface area.
According to the Agreste Conjoncture report, based on data as of January 1, 2023, 2022/23 carrot production for the fresh market should reach 295,661 tonnes. Or -20% compared to the previous campaign.
This fall in French production is explained by the -5% variation in surface areas, which total 10,652 hectares for this campaign. The variation reached -9% in the South West region, the main producing region of the country. In addition, the hot and dry weather during the summer of 2022 impacted sowing and the development of
seasonal carrots, resulting in a higher proportion of small sizes and
carrots that cannot be marketed fresh and which have been sent for processing.
Over the period from January to November 2022, according to the report, France exported 50,315 tonnes of carrots and imported 122,841 tonnes of carrots, mainly from other EU member countries (112,754 tonnes).
