Italy

Twenty one companies growing a total of 300 ha of table grape fields located between the provinces of Catania and Ragusa in Sicily currently form part of the newly created Producers’ Organization (PO) “Ducezio”, which is the first one in Sicily specialized in GPI Mazzarrone table grape. Its creation was announced last Sunday 16 September during a seminar focusing on PO’s usefulness for table grape operators.
The total retailed production of the Ducezio PO is currently 2,500 tons of Mazzarrone table grapes, which “is commonly agreed to be a specialty table grape” - the PO director Salvatore Accardi explains. “The quality of our production represents a wide potential: now our task is to valorise the production, on one side by focusing on exports, on the other by making relevant steps to satisfy the consumers’ needs”.
The Italian table grape industry has the lowest level of aggregation of the sector (only 6.1% of the total table grape production), therefore the new PO has been warmly welcomed by experts.
Sicily is the first Italian region for table grape production: in 2006 the total output amounted 366,532 tons, that is a 24% share of the total domestic supply (1,505,853 tons).
