Poland has decided to keep its border with Belarus closed indefinitely following recent Russian-Belarusian military exercises. Authorities said the move, first announced as a temporary measure, will stay in place “until the border is considered safe,” citing public security concerns.
The shutdown affects a key trade route that carries about 90% of rail freight between China and the European Union — worth an estimated US$27 billion in 2024. The closure has disrupted shipments for e-commerce firms and logistics operators, blocking all cargo.
Industry groups warned that prolonged restrictions could force freight to detour through Kazakhstan and the Black Sea, adding cost and time. Routes via Lithuania or Latvia remain open but are slower and less reliable.
Officials have not yet announced compensation for affected businesses. Poland’s foreign ministry said security concerns now outweigh trade interests, while China has urged Warsaw to safeguard the stability of the China–Europe Railway Express.
Experts say the impact will be felt most by China’s inland regions, though overall trade volumes remain limited.
