European dominance in Spanish exports of fresh fruit and vegetables

During January and February 2024, Spanish exports of fresh fruit and vegetables to the European Union reached 2.75 billion euros, representing 80% of total foreign sales during that period, which totaled 3.425 billion euros. Including non-EU European markets such as the United Kingdom or Switzerland, the percentage of exports within Europe amounts to 98%, leaving only 2% destined for other continents, according to data from the Customs and Excise Department.
Germany is the main market within the EU, with exports reaching 998 million euros, an increase of 1%. It is followed by France, with 520 million euros, although here there is a slight decrease of 1%. Italy, with 130 million euros, also saw an increase of 1%. The United Kingdom, although no longer part of the EU, remains a key destination with €463 million, reflecting an increase of 4%.
Outside Europe, Spain's fresh fruit and vegetable sales were significantly lower, totaling only €79 million, representing 2% of total exports and a 4% decrease compared to the previous year. Canada was the main market outside Europe, although exports to this country decreased by 11%, reaching 16.6 million euros.
