USA: Imports take on the Blueberry market
The supply of blueberries in the US is falling as a result of the end of the national season in several places, and the import season has just begun. "The offer has been limited in the last two weeks, especially the new crop," explains one trader. Summer has been warm, there is less fruit to store.
The import season has begun with the first volumes of South American countries: Chile, Peru and Argentina. A trader explains that Peru is in a position to supply the market with large volumes of reliable quality. Peru and Chile will be the ones who supply the most blueberries between October and December. Mexico will also be able to supply blueberries in these months, but it is more likely that producers will harvest in the spring.
Demand is falling slightly due to the rise in prices. The demand for blueberries is also growing in Canada. "The price of the new Chilean harvest is around 40% higher compared to the old harvest that is stored in the Pacific Northwest."
