These new facilities will make Barcelona a direct competitor of the major ports of northern Europe.
Barcelona has launched the largest cargo terminal in the Mediterranean.
The new Barcelona Europe South Terminal (BEST) is the port of Barcelona's most modern and is the largest in the Mediterranean. The inauguration concerned the first phase of work which cost €300 million, with the total finished facility to come to €500. BEST will extend over 100 hectares,
its length reaching 1500 meters of quay. It will have 24 gates and be able to accommodate larger vessels.
The Port of Barcelona will double its capacity from 2.6 million to 5.5 million containers per year. This new infrastructure will allow Barcelona to compete with the major northern ports - Rotterdam and Antwerp - for the entry of goods in Europe.
