Washington State produces 65% of the fresh apples grown in the United States. As growers have reached the middle of the harvest, harvest forecasts are revised downward.
According to local media outlet, Yakima Herald-Republic, Washington Apple Commission said reports show this year's harvest will be 10% lower than forecast. In August forecasts put the harvest at 134 million boxes (40 pound = 18.14 kg).
Professionals explain this decline by various factors, including a windstorm in early September which damaged the apples and the size of the fruit which is smaller this year.
Washington Apple Commission reports increased demand for apples due to the coronavirus pandemic which has pushed consumers towards healthier foods.
