According to the Dutch media, this year's harvest estimates for apples and pears are down on last year.
The latest harvest estimates forecast 207 million kilos of apples, down 12% on 2022. This drop in volume can be explained by a reduction in the area under cultivation and lower apple production. The Elstar variety remains the most widely grown, with an expected harvest of 82 million kilos, down 8% on 2022.
The forecast pear harvest is 341 million kilos, down 3% on 2022 and almost the same as in 2021. The Conference variety remains the most widely grown, with an expected harvest of 263 million kilos, down 2% on 2022.
Harvesting is due to start in mid-August, and the main apple and pear varieties will be available to consumers from early September.
