Increase the area to increase production and maintain market share.
Ecuadorian professionals want a change in the law and regulations concerning the production of bananas in order to fight better on the world market.
ACORBANEC (Asociación de Producción, Comercialización y Exportación de Banano, AGROBAN (Asociación de Exportadores de Banano del Ecuador), will present proposals to the competent authorities, in particular the National Assembly, to amend the present legislation.
The associations are calling for an extension of the permitted areas for banana plantations. The main competitors (Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala) increase their production areas and improve their competitiveness.
Ecuador's production accounts for 30% of the world's supply of bananas and professionals are afraid of losing market share if they do not manage to increase their area to increase production.
