Local media are reporting that Vietnam is consolidating its position as the 2nd largest supplier of durian to the Chinese market, just behind Thailand.
According to the Import-Export Department of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, durian exports to China in the first 4 months of 2024 were up 91% on the same period in 2023.
In the first 4 months of 2024, China imported 202,500 tonnes of fresh durian worth USD 1.09 billion. The volume from Thailand reached 121,400 tonnes (59.95% of the total), worth USD 717 million, while the volume from Vietnam reached 79,300 tonnes (39.16%), worth USD 370 million.
According to Vietnamese professionals, Vietnamese durian has a number of advantages over its competitors, including a lower price, year-round availability, lower transport costs and shorter transport times.
In addition, the scorching temperatures recorded this year in Thailand are affecting the quality of the fruit. This unfavourable climate for Thai durian could be an opportunity for Vietnamese durian to win new market share in China.
