In Switzerland, the berry harvests (raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, currants) started in July about ten days in advance and will continue until October. Production is initially estimated at 3,400 tonnes.
Fruit-Union Switzerland, in a study on berry cultivation, reported that the area in 2020 remained stable at 979.3 hectares. The area under shelter also remains constant with 158.8 hectares (30.5%) for strawberries and 127 hectares (74%) for raspberries. The total area of organically cultivated berries increases slightly to 104.4 hectares. However, an increase of 30% for organic raspberries and 23% for organic blueberries.
Berry production for this year is expected to total 3,400 tonnes. About 2,070 tonnes of raspberries, 460 tonnes of blackberries, 550 tonnes of blueberries and 316 tonnes of currants. Quantities corresponding to those of previous years. For organic production, estimates are 154 tonnes for all berries.
The Swiss appreciate berries more and more, especially raspberries whose consumption has increased by 20% compared to 2019. For blueberries, the increase was only 10%.
