11 Queensland citrus growers and exporters experienced firsthand the export opportunities for Queensland mandarins when they visited China as part of the DPI&F-led market mission in September 2006. The mission members travelled to Hong Kong and Guangzhou in southern China, and Shanghai and Yantai in the north, meeting with wholesalers, retailers, Government officials and transport companies. The group also hosted receptions in Guangzhou and Shanghai and conducted a promotion at the Yantai International Fruit Expo.
The market mission followed on from the first shipment of Queensland mandarins to China under new export protocols in August. With the assistance of the Queensland Government Trade and Investment offices in Hong Kong and Shanghai, the mission members were able to compare Queensland mandarins in the market with local and other imported product.
They saw Queensland mandarins marketed as a premium product, selling at prices well above other mandarins in the market and sought after by consumers for their sweetness, taste, quality and counter-seasonal production.
Future sales growth of Queensland mandarins will be greatly assisted by the announcement during the mission that the Queensland Honey Murcott mandarins will be recommended to the Olympics Committee for supply to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The mission members will use the market information obtained on the trip to develop strategies for 2007 to build this important export market for Queensland mandarins.
