The Indian Ministry of Agriculture has just announced that access to the Canadian market has been granted for bananas, following negotiations between the national plant protection organizations of the 2 countries.
Based on the technical information provided by India for the fresh banana, Canada approved, with immediate effect, the entry of the banana into its market.
India is the world's largest producer of bananas, with an expected production of around 32.45 million tonnes for the current crop year. The total area of banana production in the country is 0.23 million hectares. The states of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh contribute over 70% of the country's banana production.
India exports bananas mainly to Iran, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. India's banana exports increased from 35,000 tons in 2016-17 to 191,000 tons in 2020-21.
Authorization to enter the Canadian market concerns not only fresh bananas but also fresh baby corn.
