The Mexican Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in collaboration with state authorities and the agri-food industry, have joined forces to promote eco-friendly and sustainable development in the avocado sector, focusing on its production, packaging and distribution.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the image of the Mexican avocado and promoting its growth while respecting the environment and avoiding land use transformation.
In addition, they commented that it is imperative to comply with Article 99 of the General Law for Sustainable Forestry Development through collaboration between the public, private and social sectors to implement ecological practices and guarantee environmentally friendly agricultural growth.
Above all, they stressed the need to combat deforestation to ensure the sustainability of the avocado market, highlighting the importance of responsible agricultural practices that minimise the impact on water resources and reduce CO2 emissions.
The Servicio de Información Agroalimentaria y Pesquera (SIAP) mentioned the use of satellite technology for monitoring land use in avocado production, while the Michoacán Secretary of Agriculture presented "Guardian of the Forest", an initiative to prevent land use change through satellite surveillance, demonstrating an effort to maintain sustainability and legality in avocado production.
