The garlic harvest has begun: size is good and the bulk of production is for export (Europe & the USA).
The garlic harvest has begun in the Department of Calingasta, San Juan province, where 80% of production is intended for packaging and export.
The Department of Calingasta, with about 500 hectares, is a leading producer of garlic in the province. Its production is for export, mainly to Europe and the U.S., and to a lesser extent Taiwan and other Asian countries. A good bulb size
is expected, with a predominance of size 6, 7 and 5.
The province produces 70% white garlic and 30% pink. The indication of origin is an added value for producers and an asset in trade negotiations for export. A delegation of French visitors is expected. Because of a water crisis, growing areas are 10% less than last year.
