Doubling of the food import bill in 2020
FJ
The Persian Gulf countries will record an increase of food imports. It is expected that the bill for these imports will doubled from USD 24.1 billion recorded in 2009 to USD 53.1 billion in 2020 .
Persian Gulf countries have seen their population grow without a food production that can follow. These countries now highly dependent on imports (90% of food needs ) , want to provide some food security.
To this end, projects and initiatives abound. Aquaculture , urban farming , investment in farms abroad ( 8 agricultural enterprises purchased in Serbia) , agricultural land purchases ( East Africa , South Asia , Southern Europe) , modernization of storage sites. The objective is to have control over the production , storage and supply to the market and therefore greatly limiting imports into the future.
