Reusable packaging cuts emissions faster than expected, new Tosca data shows

Food and retail operators cut waste and emissions with pooled packaging models.
New sustainability data from Tosca suggests that reusable packaging systems are delivering faster-than-expected environmental gains across food and retail supply chains, as operators face growing pressure from packaging and EPR regulation.
Figures released by the reusable packaging and pooling specialist indicate that operational changes made in 2024 led to a sharp reduction in emissions and material use. Scope 3 emissions fell by 47% year on year, surpassing the company’s 2030 target ahead of schedule, while water-use intensity declined by 10% compared with 2022 levels.
The data also points to significant material savings. More than 268,000 tonnes of single-use cardboard were removed from supply chains, while customers using reusable systems avoided over 339,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions and saved an estimated 57 million cubic metres of water.
Energy sourcing and asset traceability were highlighted as additional drivers. Renewable electricity accounted for just over half of total consumption, and all new assets introduced across the U.S., U.K. and EU were equipped with RFID technology to improve tracking and reduce losses within closed-loop systems.
These results come as producers, retailers and logistics operators adapt to stricter frameworks such as the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and expanding Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes in Europe and the United States. Reusable, pooled packaging is increasingly positioned as a practical response, combining compliance support with operational efficiency.
Tosca said the progress was driven by closer collaboration with customers and the use of verified performance data. Further investment is planned in reusable assets, digital tools and automation to scale circular packaging models across retail, food production and logistics.
