Recent tariff changes announced by U.S. President Donald Trump could affect the country’s business sector.
With nearly half (47%) of Costa Rica’s exports going to the United States, recent tariff changes announced by U.S. President Donald Trump could affect the country’s business sector. The new tariffs, set to take effect on April 2, include “reciprocal tariffs” targeting imports, mainly from Mexico, Canada, and China. It remains unclear whether these tariffs will extend to other countries, but the situation is creating uncertainty.
Rodnney Salazar, president of the Chamber of Foreign Trade, stated that it is too early to predict the impact. He emphasized the need to closely monitor how these measures unfold and assess whether they will affect Costa Rican exports before making any major decisions.
Costa Rica’s key exports to the U.S. — pineapples and bananas — could be impacted by the changes. However, representatives from the Chamber of Exporters have opted to withhold judgment for now, stating that they will analyze trade data before commenting further.
